The Hemingway App is geared towards cleaning up content. It analyses your content and delivers simplified, color-coded alerts when you use complex and lengthy sentences, a passive voice and unnecessary adverbs.
Although RSS isn’t “in vogue” as it was 5+ years ago, I still find there’s no substitute for using this as a listening post for developments in your industry. When I wrote the previous post I used Google Reader to categorise sites to keep up-to-date with the latest developments in digital. When Google withdrew this since there was no revenue in it (Boo!) I used Reeder as an offline client on my Macbook Air and iOS for a while. But now I recommend Feedly since it’s the most popular so you can see by the ‘voice of the crowd’ which posts are most popular. Similar to the feature in PostRank that Google also killed off. Although feed readers aren’t in fashion they are the most efficient way to scan the latest news in different categories. So if you don’t use them try Feedly out – our analytics shows it’s one of the most common referrers to Smart Insights – do bookmark us!

Promotional items, such as brochures, business cards, press kits, websites, informational videos and merchandise, are tangible marketing tools. Some of these items include large amounts of detailed information and highlight attributes of the product or service; business cards and trade show giveaways may display only a company logo and provide contact information. In addition to increasing sales, promotional items contribute to building brand awareness, but cost is a factor when selecting these items.

I don’t know why more people don’t talk about Google Scholar, but I love this tool for researching science-heavy articles and digging into emerging studies. It limits your search to articles, theses, books, abstracts and court opinions, from academic publishers, professional societies, online repositories, universities and other web sites. Pair it with a Google Alert to get amazing research on your topics of interest delivered right to your inbox.
And nothing beats Google Search. You have the power to show people the thing they are searching for in an instant. Conversion rates are much higher when a user sees an ad about something he is actually searching for.
“Authorship” is a Google product that allows you to claim authorship of content published on other domains and link it to your Google+ profile. If social media is the fun and unpredictable uncle of the marketing family, then email is an old, reliable grandparent. Sure, it might not be as cool, but it has been proven effective and addresses a very important need. Besides, they’re more similar than you might think.
RESEARCH: If you are working for an organization, research the other companies in your industry that are doing something right online. ‘Spy’ on these competitors and you will start to recognize patterns regarding their strategies. Upon first glance, one company may look like they are killing it on Facebook because they have thousands of fans, but another company with only a few hundred Likes has much more engagement. Think about how their messaging is different and how you can incorporate some of the same techniques in your organization’s marketing.
