RESEARCH: If you are working for an organization, research the other companies in your industry that are doing something right online. ‘Spy’ on these competitors and you will start to recognize patterns regarding their strategies. Upon first glance, one company may look like they are killing it on Facebook because they have thousands of fans, but another company with only a few hundred Likes has much more engagement. Think about how their messaging is different and how you can incorporate some of the same techniques in your organization’s marketing.

For your website, blog and email campaigns, looking at page views, clicks-through, bounce rates, conversion rates and forwarding rates can be a starting point if you don’t already have a web analytics tool in place.
